In an era dominated by big hair and even bigger egos, The Cars are remembered as a quirky and reluctant force in the music world. Taking the organic simplicity of 70s rock and in turn adopting the onset of synthesizers, the Cars fashioned a distant, yet surprisingly sincere crop of new wave hits. With Ric Ocasek's delivery conjuring Lou Reed, The Cars success began in the late 1970s with songs like "Just What I Needed" and "Good Times Roll." As one of the first bands to embrace the visual medium pioneered by MTV, The Cars achieved widespread success with their then-eye-popping computer-generated video for "You Might Think" in 1984. After achieving a level of superstardom in the mid-1980s, the customary "kiss of death" occurred once the members decided to pursue solo careers. The Cars broke up in 1988, seeing Ocasek move on to enjoy a successful career as a producer for popular contemporary groups like Weezer and No Doubt.
