While they were somewhat overshadowed by The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and The Who during the days of the British Invasion, The Kinks have proved one of the most influential bands of the era. Also one of the longest-lived, despite periodic feuding between founder/brothers Ray and Dave Davies and numerous changes of style, from the power chords of their first hit, "You Really Got Me" and satire of "Sunny Afternoon" and "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" to classic Ray Davies wistful nostalgia, as in "Waterloo Sunset" and "Come Dancing." Dave Davies' guitar playing and Ray Davies' songwriting have been cited as influences by numerous artists (including The Pretenders, whose first hit was a Ray Davies composition, and whose lead vocalist, Chrissie Hynde, had a long-term relationship and a child with Ray Davies). The Davies brothers and a revolving cast of backup musicians periodically reunite for a tour or an album; both Ray and Dave published autobiographies in the late '90s.
