New York school friends Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, then recording as Tom & Jerry, had a modest hit as teenagers with "Hey Schoolgirl" in 1957, but soon broke up when their subsequent recordings went nowhere. Reuniting almost a decade later, they recorded their first album as Simon & Garfunkel; it enjoyed somewhat belated success when a folk-rock remix of one track, "The Sounds of Silence," became a huge smash in early 1966. The duo became one of the leading lights of '60s folk-rock, with a series of popular and critical hits driven by their angelic vocal harmonies and Simon's brainy songwriting. Perhaps the pinnacle of mass-market success came withthe era-defining movie "The Graduate," which included Simon & Garfunkel songs, notably the single "Mrs. Robinson." Artistic differences drove the friends to part ways in 1972, with Simon pursuing a solo career as a singer/songwriter and Garfunkel working in the theater; they've periodically reunited for benefits and other one-off performances, most notably their concert in Central Park in 1981.
