While still in secondary school, singer and songwriter Peter Gabriel joined a band that, several changes later, became Genesis. As the author of much of the group's material, he was largely responsible for its status as art-rock pioneers, and a key influence on its early sound. The arrival of drummer/vocalist Phil Collins marked the beginning of superstar status for Genesis, but shortly after the breakthrough album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Gabriel left to pursue a solo career. Beginning with the single "Solsbury Hill" in 1977, he achieved increasing success through the '70s and most of the '80s, culminating with So in 1986. Gabriel is also renowned for his film scores, notably Birdy and The Last Temptation of Christ, as well as for his work with such groups as Amnesty International. He continues to record and tour periodically, and to develop multimedia projects. His latest album, Up, was released in 2002.
