Launched in the late '60s in Birmingham, England, Yes got their first big break as the opening act for Cream's farewell performance. They soon joined such bands as King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer in carving out the progressive-rock turf, developing a distinctive sound that combined rock, folk, jazz and classical styles. Precise construction, carefully crafted instrumental layers, cosmic lyrics, extended musical explorations and impeccable high harmonies characterized the group's many hits through the '70s, including such perennial classics as "Starship Trooper" and "I've Seen All Good People." Always plagued with personnel changes, the group spent much of the '80s in two warring factions, but reunited in the '90s for more albums and tours. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they continue to attract young listeners in addition to their loyal following.
