Long before her breakthrough album, Tapestry, burst on the scene (and stayed on the charts for six years), Carole King was one of the most notable songwriters to inhabit New York's fabled Brill Building. Her peers included such future luminaries as Paul Simon, Neil Sedaka (whose hit "Oh Carol" was composed in her honor), as well as Gerry Goffin, to whom she was married in the early '60s. Goffin and King were one of the most successful songwriting teams of all time, cranking out hit after hit, starting with The Shirelles' "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," and going on to such classics as The Drifters' "Up on the Roof" and Aretha Franklin's "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman." After moving to the West Coast in the late '60s, she became friends with singer/songwriter James Taylor, who encouraged her to pursue a solo career. The legendary Tapestry (1971) and its successful follow-up Music made her a household word; she continued to write and record prolifically through the '70s before moving to Idaho and working on environmental causes. She still works on various acting and musical projects; in 2002 she released Time Heals All Wounds.
