Los Angeles trio Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells turned their sophisticated vocal harmonies, ear for catchy pop arrangements, and ability to recognize other people's good work into a steady string of hit albums and singles from 1969 till 1975. Three Dog Night (taking their name from an Australian expression describing an extremely cold evening) had smash after smash with tunes by Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, Hoyt Axton and others; long after the group's breakup, its work has been a staple of movie soundtracks from "The Big Chill" to "Boogie Nights." The band reunited briefly in the '80s, and a version fronted by Hutton and Wells periodically tours the oldies circuit.
