The multi-talented and chameleonic Bowie (he was born David Jones, but changed to Bowie after Monkee Davy Jones hit the big time) got his start as a singer/songwriter in the UK, scoring a modest hit in 1969 with "Space Oddity," a tune that was to be much bigger in subsequent releases.
