Historic Eric Clapton

We're featuring Eric Clapton today on The Drive and this morning we focused on the once best selling 1972 compilation album, History Of Eric Clapton which reached the Billboard Top Ten in the year of its release.

This best of collection helped fill a void for Eric's music during a period of several prime years during which Clapton was sidelined by personal health issues. After the late 1970 release of Layla from Eric's Derek And The Dominoes, there was no more new Clapton music until 1974's relatively laid back 461 Ocean Boulevard. During this time, Eric was rarely seen; the Concert For Bangla Desh was an exception Eric made for his good friend George Harrison which necessitated a harrowing trip to NYC for the heroin addicted guitar god. The famous cover photo for History of EC was shot that night onstage at Madison Square Garden and also appears in the booklet for the Concert for Bangla Desh box set.

The History of Eric Clapton album never made it to compact disc despite it's onetime best selling status, superseded by subsequent CD collections which concentrated on Clapton solo recordings rather than side projects and full fledged band albums from Blind Faith and Derek and The Dominoes. We listened to Side 1 this morning which pulled songs from Eric's time with The Yardbirds, John Mayall and Cream plus shorter lived projects with Jimmy Page and Steve Winwood.
