More Birthday Fun with Peter and Grace
Posted:Tuesday, 10/30/2012 at 03:10am by Greg Easterling
Yesterday was the birthday of Peter Green, the brilliant founding lead guitarist of Fleetwood Mac. After meeting Mick Fleetwood and John McVie in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, the three eventually formed their own blues oriented band named for the rhythm section. Fleetwood Mac found early success in the UK but bigtime popularity in the States would not come until a number of years after Green left the band for a low profile solo career that included many wasted years sadly lost to mental illness.

On Monday morning we presented a reissue of the early US Fleetwood Mac compilation, English Rose, the album that included the original recording of "Black Magic Woman", the Peter Green song that Santana would virtually make their own. Side 2 also featured Fleetwood Mac's big European instrumental hit, "Albatross", another Green signature piece.

Today is Grace Slick's birthday. Grace, the onetime, famous lead singer of Jefferson Airplane. She was actually born here in the Chicago area; her family resided in Evanston at the time but moved to California when Grace was quite young.

This morning we listened to a side of JA's Volunteers lp, released in late 1969 and probably the most politically charged of all their records. This was recorded by the band's best known lineup, the group that played at Woodstock...Grace, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma, Jack Cassidy and Spencer Dryden. Notable guests musicians included Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia and Nicky Hopkins. We listened to Side 1 this time.
