Short Week, Long Shadows, Pt. 1

We began a holiday shortened week of Overnight Album Sides early Monday morning with the final Led Zeppelin studio album recorded with John Bonham during his lifetime. It was 1979's In Through The Out Door, an album that reasserted Zeppelin as a musical force while acknowledging the many changes taking place in music at the time.

More synthesizers were added to Led Zeppelin's essentially guitar driven sound while allowing drummer Bonham space to try out some new ideas. Both Robert Plant and John Paul Jones stepped up at a time when Jimmy Page appeared to be more fragile health-wise.

Nobody planned In Through The Out Door as the final studio album but John Bonham's death not long after its release made it the band's final complete musical statement together. We heard Side 1 this time, highlighted by the would-be epic "In The Evening" and "Fool In the Rain".
