Keeping it Heavy on Jimi's Birthday
Posted:Tuesday, 11/27/2012 at 03:11am by Greg Easterling
Today is the birthday of Jimi Hendrix, an occasion that we rarely miss celebrating around here in one way or another.

This morning we remembered one of Jimi's most famous concerts at the Monterey International Pop Festival, held June 16-18, 1967. This was THE event that really broke Hendrix over to the larger U.S. audience after making his name over in England initially. Today we tracked a side from the 2007 release, Live at Monterey, a performance that was never fully issued on vinyl for many years. Oddly, several of the live cuts here originally appeared on an lp that featured Jimi on one side and Otis Redding on the other side....Monterey was also a huge event for introducing Redding to a larger audience as well. Since this album was issued by Warner/Reprise, Jimi's record company at the time, it's curious that a WHOLE album of his Monterey performances was not issued at the time.

Oh well, at least we have them now and this morning we heard "Foxey Lady" and "Hey Joe" as well as blues standards "Rock Me Baby", "Killing Floor" and a killer version of Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone". All on Side 1.
