Weekdays 3pm - 8pm

The Drive's Live at 5 for the week of July 18-22, 2011

Monday, July 18: Rod Stewart
One we'll hear is Tonight's The Night, from Rod's Unplugged & Seated set. The studio version was his second #1 in America, Maggie May being the first. The cooing in French as the song fades was done by Rod's then girlfriend, Swedish actress Bitt Ekland. Here's Stewart, to Mojo magazine, back in'95: "I got her drunk to sing that old French bollocks at the end, because she didn't want to do it." Her fee? "I bought her a nice frock."

Tuesday, July 19: Queen
Happy birthday to Queen's brilliant guitarist, Brian May. So many film biographies on musicians bite the dust because producers can't secure the rights to the music; the Jerry Garcia estate, for example, put the kibosh last year on a film about Jer'. The living members of Queen, however, created Queen Films and joined a producer's company to get the band's tale told. As you've probably heard, Sacha Baren-Cohen (Borat) will play Freddie Mercury. Yes!

Wednesday, July 20: Santana
Speaking of biopics of musicians, Carlos Santana (happy birthday!) is said to be collaborating with actor Benjamin Bratt and his brother Peter Bratt for a film based on his colorful life. In typical Carlos cosmic-speak, he says he wants to "present my story clearly, so people know where I come from, who I that people know that my mother is conviction and my father is charisma." He calls his life "a triumph from the day I was born."

Thursday, July 21: John Mellencamp
Farm Aid 2011 will be held in Kansas City on Saturday, August 13th. Board members John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson Neil Young & Dave Matthews will all perform, as usual. Other artists include Jakob Dylan, whose dad played the first Farm Aid, In 1985, in Champaign.

Friday, July 22: Bad Company
Released June 28th, Bad Company At Wembley is available on CD, DVD & Blu-Ray. The concert is from April of 2010 and features Bad Co. founders Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs & Simon Kirke. Original bassist Boz Burrell passed away in 2006, and besides his replacement the band is augmented by guitarist Howard Leese, who spent many years with Heart.

Rock Steady,
