Weekdays 3pm - 8pm

The Drive's Live at 5 for the week of August 8-12, 2011

Monday, August 8: U2
Happy birthday to U2 guitarist Dave Evans, more commonly known as the Edge, a handle his mates gave him because of the shape of his chin. In Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time special issue, Edge was ranked #24 and got the compliment "Rarely has a guitarist acheived so much by playing so little."

Tuesday, August 9: Van Halen
Two from the Sammy era (Candyman &...jest kiddin'). Remember how people sometimes called the band Van Hagar? In Sammy's autobiography, Red, he recalls that various record label/management types seriously pushed for that name, but Sammy, Ed, Alex & Michael stood firm. He also spins a yarn in Red that guitarist Ronnie Montrose (Sammy sang for Montrose on their first 2 albums) reacted to Sammy getting singled out for praise in a review during their European tour by stopping talking to him!

Wednesday, August 10: Cheap Trick
Cheap Trick have called off their September 1st Vancouver, British Columbia gig because they're skittish about using a stage similiar to the one that collapsed on them at the Ottawa Bluesfest on July 17th. The stage for the Vancouver show is provided by Mega-Stage by Berger, who also provided the one in Ottawa. Cheap Trick say in a statement that unless current investigations prove otherwise, they will not appear on a Berger stage "as a matter of principle."

Thursday, August 11: Bruce Springsteen
3 by the Boss as part of the Drive's Triple Play Thursday!
One will be Dancing In The Dark. Footage from the original concept of the video surfaced on YouTube. The outtakes show Bruce literally dancing in the dark three times to the song. Springsteen had said back in the day he didn't like the original video and dumped it in favor of the one where he pulls a young Courtney Cox onto the stage with him.

Friday, August 12: Steely Dan
It's the Dan of Steel making their Ravinia debut with 2 heap big Drive shows this night and the next! I checked out their 8/2 Columbia, Maryland setlist: Aja, Hey 19, Black Friday, Time Out Of Mind, Dirty Work, Josie, Peg, My Old School, Reelin' In The Years &, Kid Charlemagne were all on it, as was Papa Don't Take No Mess, a James Brown cover.

It's the smile on my face,

Bobby Skafish
