The Drive's Live at 5 for the week of August 29-September 2, 2011

Monday: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Ain't Nothing wrong with live Free Fallin' but the real gem here is the I Fought The Law/Route 66 medley recorded in 1978 at The Paradise Club in Boston for the old syndicated radio show of live recordings called The King Biscuit Flower Hour. It ended up on a 12" with Listen To Her Heart (studio version) on the A side.

Tuesday, August 30: Genesis
Enjoy orchestral music AND Genesis? Are you hip to The Genesis Suite? A Brit named Tolga Kashif released The Queen Suite nine years ago and returned last year with a 73 minute classical music treatment of Genesis songs both well known (Follow You Follow Me,Tonight Tonight Tonight)& not so well known (Entangled, Undertow). Besides a cellist, pianist and violinist, Mr. Kashif employs the London Voices choir and the London Symphony Orchestra. We'll enjoy the band themselves from 3 Sides Live & The Way We Walk.

Wednesday, August 31: Van Morrison
Happy birthday, Van the Man! Aw gee, Van, why the scowl?
Courtesy of Wolfgang's Vault, we have Van at New York City's Bottomline venue from 1978 and a killer version of Moondance originally broadcast live on a California FM in 1986, and can be found on the disc Van Morrrison At The Movies, a sampler of Van tracks that were used on the big screen. Incidentally, Moondance was used in the flick An American Werewolf In London.

Thursday, September 1: Supertramp
With Yes & Supertramp sharing the Drive's Thursday Artist Portrait, progressive rock is the order of the day.

Friday, September 2: Lynyryd Skynyrd
File this item under "Ooh, that smell:" This fall Skynyrd will open their own joint on the Las Vegas strip: Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ And Beer. The decor as customers walk in will be based on the backwoods shack where the band created their sound (which they brought to Ravinia last night) in Jacksonville. The staff will be encouraged to jump on the bar and the stage to lead sing-alongs of Skynyrd classics.
