Fermilab's Prairie Seed Harvest
Calling all nature lovers. How would you like the chance to help diversify one of the oldest prairie restorations in Illinois? The U.S. Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is looking for volunteers to help with its annual Prairie Seed Harvest. Two harvest events are planned, on Saturday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. Fermilab's site hosts 1,000 acres of restored native prairie land, and each year community members pitch in to help collect seeds from those native plants. The Lake Shore Hogs chapter will hold its annual stuffed animal ride bringing Christmas gifts to children in care of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Salvation Army Tree of Lights Ceremony
It's a joyous kick-off to the Christmas season and the annual Salvation Red Kettle campaign! The 32nd Annual Tree of Lights Ceremony on Thursday, November 13th, 5 p.m., in the Great Hall at Union Station. This festive celebration will include musical performances by cast members of Broadway in Chicago 'Hansel and Gretel,' Ballet Chicago's 'Nutcracker,' Walter Payton College Prep's Sounds of Sweetness Choir and the Salvation Army Brass Ensemble. 'Chicago, Europe and the Great War' at The Newberry
The Newberry, 60 W. Walton Street, is opening its latest exhibit, 'Chicago, Europe, and the Great War,' which allows visitors to experience what the Chicagoans of 1914 were feeling as the world went to war. The exhibit underscores the deep connections between Chicago and the battlefields of Europe by drawing on the Newberry's collection of striking wartime propaganda posters, news reports, editorial cartoons, and a number of never-before-seen photographs. Steppenwolf Theatre Opens Season with 'The Night Alive'
Steppenwolf Theatre Company launches its 2014/15 Subscription Season with the Chicago premiere production of The Night Alive by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson. 'A Christmas Story' Comes Home Exhibit at Indiana Welcome Center
This holiday season, the 'A Christmas Story' Comes Home exhibit, presented in collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will be on display from Nov. 8, 2014 until Jan. 4, 2015 in the W.F. Wellman Exhibit Hall. The design takes visitors to the streets of downtown Hohman, a fictional Indiana town which was a disguise for Jean Shepherd's hometown Hammond. As part of the exhibit, the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond will feature six animated display scenes from 'A Christmas Story.' The Indiana Welcome Center is located at the intersection of I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue South in Hammond; only 30 minutes from downtown Chicago and two hours north of Indianapolis.
