Rescue or Destroy Art Tournament
Rescue or Destroy is a bi-weekly art tournament featuring 16 Chicago-based artists. Each artist brings a piece to the competition and the audience decides which will be rescued and which will be destroyed. The 'rescued' work goes forward in the tournament and the piece slated for destruction could face the chopping block. Events are held every First Thursday and Third Saturday from February 22 through August 22nd at Gallery Bar, 738 N. Clark St. in Chicago. Countryside Association is currently looking for sticker donations for their Golden Opportunities Program for the 55 and up age group. Art Gives Children in DCFS Care a Voice
The exhibit titled 'Art From Youth in Care and From Others Who Care'will be on display, open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily beginning Monday, April 21 through Friday, April 25, 2014. The exhibit will be on the main level of the Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph Street in Chicago, and will feature art from children who are currently in care, or have been in care, and by artists who have been affected by child abuse. The art depicted often captures the hidden emotions a child is experiencing. Expressing their feeling through art aids in the healing process. Free Violence-Prevention Workshops
Thousand Waves Violence Prevention is offering an intensive self-defense course. Participants learn the Five Fingers of Self-Defense -- Think, Yell, Run, Fight and Tell -- and practice applying these stragies to a variety of situations. In role plays, group discussions and partnership exercises, students gain confidence and increased awareness as they learn concrete ways to respond to conflict and violence. Run for Your LIFE SAFETY
The Tinley Park Fire Department and the nationally accredited Tinley Park Fire Prevention Bureau will host the second annual Run for Your Life Safety 5K at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, May 4 at the 80th Avenue Metra train station, 18001 S. 80th Ave., Tinley Park.

The event will again raise money for the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance's Camp I Am Me, which is the first accredited burn camp in the United States for children ages 8 to 16 who are burn survivors. Last year, the event raised more than $13,000 for the camp through sponsorships and participation.

The run begins promptly at 8:30 a.m., and race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. Participants can park and register in the station's south parking lot. Packets will be given prior to the start of the run.

Preregistration costs $20 and closes at 3 p.m. April 25. Registration after April 25 costs $25, and family registration costs $50. Completed registration forms must be submitted for each participant. T-shirts and a commemorative fire patch will be given to all preregistered participants.

The Joffrey Ballet's 2013-14 'Masters of Dance' season comes to a close this spring with the U.S. Premiere of Krzysztof Pastor's Romeo & Juliet. Pastor, Director of the Polish National Ballet and Resident Choreographer of the Dutch National Ballet, originally created this new version of Romeo & Juliet in 2008 for the Scottish Ballet.
