Buffalo Springfield
As legendary as they were short-lived, Buffalo Springfield were, along with The Byrds, the key formative influence on the folk-rock and country-rock movements to come. The band of folkies-turned-rockers formed in 1966 shortly after Stephen Stills, walking down Sunset Boulevard with Richie Furay, spotted his Canadian acquaintance Neil Young driving along in a hearse. They became noteworthy in hindsight as what Rolling Stone termed a "reverse supergroup" -- most of Buffalo Springfield's members (Stills, Young, Furay, Jim Messina, Dewey Martin, Bruce Palmer and Douglas Hastings) went on to greater success in later projects. Creative differences, immigration problems and other difficulties beset the band, causing their eventual breakup in 1968. In the meantime, they'd managed to release three classic albums, as well as a hit single, Stills' "For What It's Worth."
