Byrds

The Byrds came together in the thriving Los Angeles folk scene in the mid-'60s. Mixing the pop energy of the British Invasion with more traditional folk and country stylings, they burst on the scene in early 1965 with a cover version of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" -- a record that's generally credited with launching the folk-rock boom that followed. The creative chemistry of the original members -- Jim (later Roger) McGuinn. David Crosby, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Mike Clarke -- soon gave way to artistic differences, and within a few years, after many personnel changes, the group had fallen apart completely. But their trademark sound of high harmonies and jangly guitars has gone on to influence hundreds of bands that followed, most notably Tom Petty and R.E.M., while the individual members went on to such noteworthy projects as Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
