Carly Simon
Child of a distinguished New York family (her father co-founded publisher Simon & Shuster), Carly Simon got her start in music singing with her sister Lucy as the Simon Sisters in the early '60s. Her solo debut, Carly Simon, and its hit single "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" (a poignant, conflicted song from the point of view of a young woman being pressured into marriage), set the tone for the confessional, introspective tone of her subsequent work -- which also included considerably feistier numbers such as the popular "You're So Vain." She had many hits throughout the '70s, including several duets with James Taylor, to whom she was married from 1972 to 1983. The grueling pace of touring eventually proved too much, as she collapsed onstage from exhaustion in 1980; after that her touring days were all but over, and she fell somewhat out of the spotlight. She has continued to write and record; her most recent album was a Christmas collection for Rhino in 2002.
