Jethro Tull

Named after an 18th-century inventor, Jethro Tull were part of a pack of folk/blues/classical-influenced art-rock bands in England in the late '60s. What immediately set them apart from their contemporaries, though, was frontman Ian Anderson -- flute-playing wild man extraordinaire and crafter of dense, cerebral lyrics. Starting with the 1969 single "Living in the Past" and the next year's album Benefit, the band was hugely popular with critics and fans on both sides of the Atlantic for several years, most notably with the evergreen classics Aqualung and Thick As a Brick. The critics lost interest in the early '70s, but a fanatical following continued to support Anderson and his ever-changing supporting cast well into the '80s, when the frontman, plagued by throat troubles, was forced to give up touring. Since recovered, he periodically puts together another version of Tull and hits the tour circuit.
