Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney is, according to Rolling Stone, the most commercially successful rock composer of all time, with his Beatles tunes only the beginning. He also, according to the same source, holds the world record for attendance at a show given by a solo performer (Rio de Janeiro, 1990). Following the breakup of the Fab Four, McCartney toured and recorded with a succession of bands, including Wings, for decades. Along the way he's collaborated with such songwriting partners as Elvis Costello and Michael Jackson (the latter relationship ended badly when Jackson acquired publishing rights to the Lennon-McCartney canon), and maintained a high international profile. While his songwriting forte is undoubtedly pop...and, pre- and post-Beatles, he's got the hits to prove it... he's also broadened his musical horizons throughout his career, notably with the ambitious Liverpool Oratorio, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, and Wings...haunting "Mull of Kintyre," which became the best-selling British single of all time. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997, the former Beatle is now Sir Paul McCartney.
