Sly And The Family Stone
Founded in 1967 by Bay Area disc jockey/musician/record producer Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart), Sly & the Family Stone were noteworthy both for being the first truly integrated rock group and for their creative, dynamic mix of musical styles. Their second album, 1968's Dance to the Music, launched them on the path to stardom, but their popularity went through the roof after 1969's Stand!<,/I> which spawned multiple hit singles. Unfortunately, just as the group was peaking, Stone was falling into a pit of substance abuse and erratic behavior, sometimes missing shows entirely. 1971's There's a Riot Going On was much darker than its upbeat predecessors, and its single, "Family Affair," was the group's last #1 hit. Shortly thereafter the group began to fall apart, as did Stone himself, who sporadically worked on solo projects and collaborations with other artists, but was unable to overcome either his addictions or the advent of disco. By the time he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, he had vanished from public view.
