David Bowie
The multi-talented and chameleonic Bowie (he was born David Jones, but changed to Bowie after Monkee Davy Jones hit the big time) got his start as a singer/songwriter in the UK, scoring a modest hit in 1969 with "Space Oddity," a tune that was to be much bigger in subsequent releases. With a characteristic talent for anticipating pop-culture trends, he had soon transformed himself into an androgynous, glitter-encrusted, highly theatrical space alien, achieving huge success on both sides of the Atlantic with his Ziggy Stardust persona. Ziggy would give way to several other incarnations, including the surreal Diamond Dog and the scary Thin White Duke; along the way Bowie would experiment with a wide variety of styles and collaborate with a who's who including John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Brian Eno and Queen. He produced a number of noteworthy albums for other artists, including Lou Reed, Mott the Hoople (whose hit "All the Young Dudes" was a Bowie composition), and Iggy Pop. He's also won acclaim for stage and screen work, including the title roles in "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and "Elephant Man," as well as his performance as his late friend Andy Warhol in "Basquiat." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
