Cheap Trick
Lead guitarist and Rockford, Illinois native Rick Nielsen's signature 5-neck electric guitar almost seems like a summation of his famous-power pop outfit Cheap Trick; fun, tongue-in cheek, and most importantly, loud. Formed in 1972 in the wake of the British Invasion, Cheap Trick corrupted The Beatles perfect pop song craft with the spirit of punk rock, creating a catchy sound all their own. This combination, evident on megahits like "I Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender", helped launch the famous 1978 live album At Budokan and Cheap Trick's career into the platinum stratosphere. The group continued to release new work throughout the '80s and '90s, also writing and recording the theme music for Comedy Central's The Colbert Report. Cheap Trick's brash arena-rock tunefulness reverberated in the 1990s with rock outfits such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Everclear, passing the group's lively character onto a new generation.
