Elton John
Since joining forces with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin in 1968, British singer/pianist/flamboyant entertainer Elton John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight) has racked up a series of awards, firsts, and superlatives. His career has had some ups and downs over the decades, related to factors ranging from changing fashions to substance abuse to feuds with Taupin, but from 1970 to 1996, he had a single in the Top 40 every year. Starting with his first album, Elton John, he had a series of blockbusters through most of the '70s, but this pinnacle was dwarfed by the enormous popularity of "Candle in the Wind," originally a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, but rewritten in 1997 for Princess Diana's memorial -- the single became the fastest-selling hit of all time. He collaborated with Tim Rice on music for the soundtrack to Disney's "The Lion King," and received an Oscar for best original song for the track "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Elton John continues to record and tour, and is noted as a tireless campaigner for AIDS-related charities.
