Doobie Brothers
While lineup changes have been a constant with the Doobie Brothers since the band was founded in 1970, the group's history splits fairly neatly into the Tom Johnston period and the Michael McDonald period. Guitarist/vocalist Johnston co-founded the band in San Jose and was integral to the country-boogie sound of such early hits as "Jesus Is Just Alright" and "Black Water." But when Johnston fell ill in 1975, vocalist/keyboardist Michael McDonald was brought in, initially as a temporary fill-in and ultimately as the band's new frontman. McDonald soon unveiled a revamped, poppier sound, which found its most successful expression in the hit album Minute by Minute, released after Johnston had left the band for good. The Doobies officially disbanded in 1982, but have periodically regrouped with an ever-varying cast in later years.
