Boston

Beantown's arena-rock pioneers struck platinum with their first release, 1976's Boston, which spawned several hit singles and was, until displaced by Whitney Houston a decade later, the best-selling pop debut album in history. Co-founder and MIT-trained engineer Tom Scholz, however, soon proved to be a serious perfectionist, as a result of which the group's next album didn't come out till 1978, not to be followed with another until 1986. By that time, legal battles and artistic differences had decimated the original lineup, and when the next album appeared in 1994, Scholz was the only surviving founder in the band. He continues to record and tour with various incarnations of Boston, but has also achieved considerable renown among musicians for some of the high-tech gear he's invented.
