Steve Miller Band
The Steve Miller Band has had several incarnations since the guitarist left the Midwest in the '60s to catch the wave of the "San Francisco Sound." His band, which at the time included Boz Scaggs, soon became known for its distinctive, slightly psychedelic blues-rock and scored a recording contract after a hot show at Monterey Pop. Two successful albums followed in the early '70s, including The Joker, which for good or ill unleashed the Pompatus of Love on hapless future generations. The double whammy of a near-fatal car crash and a bout with hepatitis sidelined Miller for several years, after which he returned, having reinvented his sound and his band to a new lite-rock format. He made another modestly successful comeback in the '80s, and to this day various configurations of the Steve Miller Band remain a staple of the oldies circuit.
