Chicago
Formed in 1967 as the Chicago Transit Authority (a name they had to change when the actual transit authority objected), Chicago burst on the scene with a distinctively horn-intensive brand of rock and became one of the most commercially successful bands of all time. During the late '60s and early '70s, they had hit after hit with their albums, which combined light rock, pop and jazz in an accessible, crowd-pleasing style. The tragic death of singer Terry Kath in a shooting accident in 1978 was a blow from which the band never fully recovered, and there have been numerous personnel shifts over the years. Still, the group remains active, continuing to tour and record at a steady pace.
