Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac are one of the most successful groups in the history of rock n roll, having sold over 100 million albums in the course of their multi-decade career. In 1967, three musicians from the fabled John Mayall's Bluesbreakers -- guitarist Peter Green (who had replaced Eric Clapton in the group), bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood -- decided to strike out on their own in a group that initially combined all their names: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. They enjoyed great success in the UK, less in the U.S., and struggled through numerous personnel changes. Green ultimately left the group, suffering from mental problems due to heavy drug use.

The band didn't really hit its stride, or attain its canonical lineup, until McVie, his wife Christine (who, as Christine Perfect, had been playing keyboards with Spencer Davis and the Chicken Shack), and Fleetwood pulled up stakes and moved to Los Angeles. There they hooked up with soft-rock duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks; the former's pop artistry and the latter's distinctive voice and charismatic presence revitalized and reinvented the band, and their self-titled album, released in 1975, launched several hit singles. This long-deferred success was accompanied by the breakup of both the band's couples; the resulting turbulence found expression in 1977's Rumours, which, according to All Music Guide, became the second best-selling album of all time. The group continued to record hit albums while slowly disintegrating over the following years; all its members pursued solo careers, of which Nicks' was most successful. The entire 1975 lineup reunited for a single performance in 1993 to play at President Clinton's inauguration ("Don't Stop," from Rumours, had been his campaign theme song), and again in 1997 for an album, The Dance, and subsequent tour.
