The Pretenders
Akron, Ohio native Chrissie Hynde had been part of London's punk and new wave scene in the early '70s, and had played with several bands when, in 1978, she launched The Pretenders. Comprising Hynde, guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, bassist Pete Farndon and drummer Martin Chambers, the band soon had a UK hit with its first single, "Stop Your Sobbing," a cover of a tune by Ray Davies of The Kinks, produced by Nick Lowe. Their third single, "Brass in Pocket," became a hit in the U.S. as well. Hynde and Davies met and fell in love in 1980. During the months of late 1982-early 1983, both Honeyman-Scott and Farndon died of drug overdoses, and Hynde gave birth to Davies' child. The first of numerous reinventions of the band came later in 1983, when Hynde pulled together a new lineup and recorded the critical and commercial success Learning to Crawl. The band lineup has changed ever since, but Hynde and crew continue to tour and record, and recently released their first album on independent label Artemis.
