Paul Simon
Frequent Grammy winner Paul Simon's songs feature articulate, thoughtful, often witty and/or angst-ridden lyrics set to catchy tunes. He was already a professional songwriter, mostly of material for other artists, when he and friend Art Garfunkel burst on the folk-rock scene with "The Sound of Silence," and even before Simon & Garfunkel officially broke up, his solo career was well under way. His greatest chart success came in the early '70s, but he's continued to innovate and explore in later decades -- sometimes to enormous acclaim, as with 1986's Graceland, recorded with South African musicians Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and sometimes less successfully, as with his 1998 Broadway production, "The Capeman," which quickly folded. In 1999 he toured with Bob Dylan. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
