Emerson, Lake And Palmer

The seeds of British "supergroup" Emerson, Lake and Palmer were sown in San Francisco in late 1969. Keyboardist Keith Emerson, whose band, The Nice, were opening at the Fillmore West for King Crimson, got to talking backstage with the headliners' vocalist/bassist Greg Lake; the two hit it off and started discussing possible collaborations. They officially teamed up the next year, bringing drummer Carl Palmer on board. In the wake of a couple of festival appearances, the band's self-titled debut LP and its single, "Lucky Man," became hits. Through most of the '70s the group epitomized artistic, sophisticated progressive rock, heavy on the symphonic arrangements and portentous sentiments. They made adventuresome forays into the possibilities of synthesizers and electronic instruments while frequently, and seriously, immersing themselves in the classical. Long-lived by "supergroup" standards, ELP were nonetheless plagued by artistic differences, and ultimately broke up in 1979. They reunited for an album and tour in the '90s, but further plans were undone by Emerson's repetitive stress injury that kept him from playing.
