The Rolling Stones
The chance reunion of childhood classmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and their mutual passion for the blues, launched what became the most successful and longest-running rock 'n' roll band of all time. Drummer Charlie Watts joined the duo, along with Bill Wyman and Brian Jones, to form the Rolling Stones (named after a line in a Muddy Waters song) in 1963, and the group has been at the top of the rock 'n' roll heap for most of the decades since. Over the years the band has survived (and sometimes flaunted) drug addiction, legal troubles, and other bad-boy baggage, the ultimate low point being the murder of an audience member at the Stones' legendary, ill-conceived Altamont concert. Jones died somewhat mysteriously shortly after leaving the band in 1969 (ultimately replaced by current guitarist Ron Wood); Wyman called it quits at the 30-year mark in 1993. But to this day, as Rolling Stone, the magazine puts it, "The Rolling Stones define rock 'n' roll."
