Journey
Given their name by a radio-station contest, Journey got their start in 1973 and soon came to represent a new generation of San Francisco bands, heavy on loud guitars and soaring vocals. Over the course of its existence the band has had numerous personnel changes, with the chief constant being founder Neal Schon, previously of Santana. When the original Santana band broke up, co-founder Greg Rolie soon joined Journey, but the band didn't really hit its stride till it recruited singer Steve Perry. Perry's extraordinary pipes soon became the distinctive sound of a succession of chart-topping hits that continued well into the '80s. Journey officially broke up in 1986, but its members have reunited in various configurations for albums and tours.
