U2
Formed in the late '70s when its members were still in high school in their native Dublin, Ireland, U2 soon settled into their canonical lineup of singer Paul (Bono) Hewson, guitarist David (The Edge) Evans, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. The young rockers topped the Irish charts with their debut EP, and over the next few years had multiple hits on both sides of the Atlantic. Along the way they became known as much for their principles as their music; most of the bandmembers were devout Christians and not at all averse to looking silly in support of their beliefs, which led in turn to powerful anthems on subjects ranging from sectarian strife in Belfast to racial injustice in South Africa.
Their career peaked with 1987's The Joshua Tree, and after spending much of the '80s in incessant work, recording and touring, U2 were a good deal less active in the '90s. They returned with a bang in 2000 with a new hit album, All That You Can't Leave Behind
