Joe Cocker
Soulful English pub-rocker Joe Cocker had his first big British hit in 1968 with a cover of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends." Soon he had hooked up with ace Southern producer Leon Russell, had another smash with Russell's "Delta Lady," and recorded two successful albums. His cover of the Box Tops' "The Letter" hit the U.S. top 10 in 1970, about the time Russell put together the blockbuster "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour. Rather than build on this success though, Cocker succumbed to alcoholism in the early '70s, and it was believed his career was over. He scored a successful comeback later in the '70s with "You Are So Beautiful," and with his duet with Jennifer Warnes on "Up Where We Belong." Cocker continues to record and tour, but has never again hit the pinnacle of the Russell days.
