Creedence Clearwater Revival
At a time when the Bay Area was awash in psychedelic bands, Creedence Clearwater Revival hit big with their own unique bayou-immersed flavor of rock -- all the more remarkable because band members John and Tom Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook hailed not from Louisiana but from El Cerrito. Tom Fogerty had founded the band as The Golliwogs in the '50s, but they didn't have any real success until brother John Fogerty took over the songwriting and the general direction of the band in the late '60s. For the next several years they mixed guitar jams, rootsy rock and blue-collar political fury in a blend that foreshadowed such Southern-rock heroes as the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Unfortunately, the band has also been noteworthy for strife and litigation; Tom Fogerty, tired of his brother's dominance of what had been his band, left in 1971; the band broke up soon after, and Tom Fogerty died in 1990. John Fogerty, whose solo career revived in the '80s after a fierce legal battle with Fantasy Records, Creedence's old label, has gone on to become embroiled in lawsuits with various parties, most recently with Cook and Miller, who tour periodically as Creedence Clearwater Revisited.
