The Police
While they came into existence during the punk-rock days in 1977 and became associated with that movement, The Police (ex-schoolteacher Gordon Sumner, AKA Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers) showed much greater musical sophistication and artistry than the typical punk artist. They managed to meld influences ranging from jazz to reggae into their work, scoring a series of hits starting with "Roxanne" in 1979. By 1983, they had become the most popular rock band in the world, culminating with the success of their album Synchronicity. At the end of their tour for that album, The Police announced that they were going on hiatus to pursue individual projects, and, despite occasional one-off appearances such as a 1996 benefit for Amnesty International, have never regrouped. On the other hand, they've never officially broken up, either.
