Stevie Nicks
Stevie Nicks' breathy, fragile voice and sensuous, magic-dabbling stage persona were a key ingredient in the blockbuster success of Fleetwood Mac over the years, but her songwriting abilities have also resulted in some of the group's biggest hits. The Arizona-born singer/songwriter grew up in the L.A. area and began performing as a small child; by the time she and then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham joined forces to record their debut, Buckingham Nicks, she had already honed her skills in several groups. The album, which featured a nude photo of the artists on the cover, went nowhere (and has become highly collectible as a result); however, its producer, Keith Olsen, was using it as a demo of his skills in presentation to Fleetwood Mac, and the band, looking to jump-start its career in the U.S., were intrigued by Buckingham and Nicks as musicians. The rest is history -- the smash Fleetwood Mac came out in 1975, followed by the even bigger Rumours in 1977. Gold and platinum albums abounded for the group in the following decades; in the meantime Nicks had released her solo debut, Bella Donna, which featured duets with Tom Petty and Don Henley and was a huge success. More successful albums followed; while her career hit a bit of a slump during the '90s, she returned in force in 2001 with a new album, Trouble in Shangri-La, which included a duet with Sheryl Crow. She also joined Destiny's Child for the video of their hit single, "Bootylicious," which sampled her single "Edge of Seventeen." She's continued to be a key contributor to Fleetwood Mac as well, as evidenced by their most recent album, Say You Will, and its supporting tour.
