Jefferson Airplane
Founded in the summer of 1965 in San Francisco with a sort of folky blues sound, the Jefferson Airplane soon came to epitomize the culture and ethos of the Summer of Love with their breakthrough album Surrealistic Pillow, featuring the smash hits "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love." For most of their history, the Airplane were plagued by creative differences among the band members, particularly founder Marty Balin, guitarist Paul Kantner and singer Grace Slick, and by more than their share of legal troubles, being something of a lightning rod for law enforcement in the turbulent '60s. Nonetheless they released a series of noteworthy albums that captured the spirit of the times before Balin's departure in 1971, followed by the band's breakup the following year. Members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady went on to launch Hot Tuna, while Kantner and Slick (and later Balin) morphed the band into Jefferson Starship. The band has periodically reunited with various lineups.
