Linda Ronstadt

Arizona native Ronstadt has enjoyed a successful multi-genre career since heading to L.A. with a friend and starting the Stone Poneys. During the '60s, that group had several modestly successful folk-rock albums and one hit single, "Different Drum," penned by Monkee and White-Out heir Mike Nesmith. From there, initially backed by musicians who would go on to become The Eagles, Ronstadt became a multi-platinum interpreter of work by various singer/songwriters, ranging from The Eagles' Henley and Frey to Jagger-Richards, Warren Zevon, and Elvis Costello. When momentum started to wane in the early '80s, she made several cross-genre leaps, to generally good reception: first, an appearance in a Broadway production, and later a movie, of Gilbert & Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance," and a series of albums with orchestra conductor Nelson Riddle featuring pre-rock pop standards. Shortly thereafter she returned to her Latin roots with the hit album Canciones de mi Padre, and recorded a country album with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. She continues to work in various styles and makes occasional appearances; an enhanced version of What's New?, her first release with Riddle, was issued in 2002.
