Sting

Before The Police disintegrated in 1984, frontman/bassist Sting had already begun exploring new musical directions. This interest found expression in his first solo release, 1975's The Dream of the Blue Turtles, which also featured jazz greats Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, and Omar Hakim. Sting went on to build from that album's success, often collaborating with a global cast of musicians. He had a series of hit albums throughout the '80s, and generally became more popular than The Police in their heyday. He's known for his work on behalf of numerous causes, from Amnesty International to the Rainforest Foundation. Along the way, he's made a successful transition from edgy new-wave artist to perennial draw on the adult-contemporary circuit; his 1999 release Brand New Day scored two Grammy awards, for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Album.
