The Guess Who
Superstars in their native Canada, the Guess Who were recording as Chad Allan and the Expressions when their record label decided they'd sell more albums if audiences thought they were stealth superstars from the British Invasion. Their debut album was thus coyly emblazoned "Guess Who?" -- and the name stuck. Co-founded by Chad Allan and Randy Bachman in the early '60s, the group enjoyed its greatest success after Burton Cummings became lead vocalist in the wake of Allan's 1966 departure. The 1969 single "These Eyes" became a huge hit both in Canada and in the U.S., and was followed the next year by "American Woman." The latter, with less-than-affectionate Vietnam-era lyrics about Canada's neighbor to the south, became the group's greatest American hit -- thoughtfully omitted from the program when the Guess Who performed for President and Mrs. Nixon and Prince Charles. The group began to fall apart in the '70s, as Bachman's conversion to Mormonism led him to spurn the rock lifestyle; he left the group in 1970 to found what would become Bachman Turner Overdrive. While the group had several more hits, including "Share the Land," Cummings officially broke up the Guess Who in 1975 when he left to pursue a solo career. Since that time, a frequently changing lineup continues to reunite and tour occasionally as the Guess Who.
