Bob Dylan
Named by Life magazine as one of the 100 most important Americans of the 20th century, Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman) has been a mythic, larger-than-life figure for most of his career. His songs have been covered by literally hundreds of artists since the days when he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s. Pioneering both musical poetry and distinctly non-pop vocals, he continued to shake things up in later years, enjoying a particular creative and commercial high point during the '70s, when several of his albums hit #1 on the Billboard pop albums chart. Over the ensuing decades, his work has ranged from spectacular to lackluster, and frequently reflects his current obsession; he's sometimes gone into seclusion, obscurity or artistic funks, but he invariably emerges with new force and vigor. He's worked with a wide range of artists, including The Band, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, the Grateful Dead, and Paul Simon. In 2000, his song "Things Have Changed," from the soundtrack to "Wonder Boys," won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for best original song.
